SFCED and MOEWD Receive Statewide Award for CIRM

The SFCED and the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development (MOEWD) received statewide honors for their partnership in bringing the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to San Francisco. The award was presented by the California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED), the statewide professional economic development organization, at their annual meeting. Several other economic development agencies and cities competed for the prestigious award.

C’est Bon! SFCED Unites Paris Region with SF State/Digital Media Companies

Building on San Francisco’s selection as the U.S. Headquarters for the Paris Regional International Mission Enterprise (P.R.I.M.E.), more than a dozen companies from Paris and San Francisco convened at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce to exchange ideas about the future of digital media. By the end of the meeting, officials had created business-to-business ties and strengthened connections between the two cities. The meeting builds on the SFCED’s focus on digital arts and gaming as an area of job growth and economic expansion. The SFCED previously worked closely with the Paris Region to locate their North American headquarters here.

Joaquin Alvarado, director of San Francisco State University’s Institute for the Next Generation Internet, helped organize the meeting, and is working closely with the SFCED on other digital media opportunities.

“Joaquin and SF State are critical partners in our outreach to digital media companies, both here and abroad,” said Dennis Conaghan, SFCED executive director. A future Paris-San Francisco meeting is scheduled for October 9, 2006.

SFCED in Action

United Airlines – The SFCED is working closely with the Mayor’s Office and SFO on the potential interest of UAL in a new headquarters location. With San Francisco on the “short list,” a working proposal along with more than 50 letters of support from individual business and business organizations were presented to UAL officials during their recent visit. United’s headquarters operations employ approximately 350 people.

Economic Summit -- A forum to discuss the City’s long-term economic plan is slated for September 26, 2006. The forum is being planned in concert with the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Investors will receive more information as the agenda is finalized.

Bio 2006 International Convention -- Executive Director Dennis Conaghan and Olivia Jenq, Senior Director of Development and Global Partnerships, kept the spotlight on the City’s biotech industry by attending the 2006 international biotech convention in Chicago, featuring more than 16,000 industry leaders. They met with representatives from more than 300 companies and countries. Follow up with several “hot” prospects continues.

IT and Medical Technology Outreach – Olivia Jenq represented the SFCED at two leading industry events, focusing on IT and Medical Devices and Technology (Pitcom). “Outputs” include more than 65 scheduled meetings with IT and medical device companies which expressed an interest in a Northern California presence, and several EU and Asian economic development agencies who are scouting for Bay Area locations for their client companies.
