    Report: S.J. to lead area growth
    A new report reveals in the next 30 years massive population and job growth for San Jose.  South Bay officials are taking the report as a sign that the city may finally be stepping out of San Francisco’s shadow. Executive Director Dennis Conaghan comments on the new developments.

    Annual Mayors’ Economic Forecast
    The SFCED along with the Chamber of Commerce, SPUR and other economic development organizations have aligned with the Mayor’s office for the Annual Mayors’ Economic Forecast, an annual event with the San Francisco Mayor and Oakland Mayor together discussing the future visions and challenges of both cities.

    Prime, Inc - Paris Region officially opened its new North American office
    The SFCED worked with representatives from The Paris Region for more than a year, and were able to convince them that a San Francisco location best suited their needs.  Last spring, with the help of San Francisco State University, we were able to convene a very timely symposia focusing on business connections between the Paris Region and Bay Area companies in the digital media arena.


  • 10/30/06 – Sirna Therapeutics
    San Francisco’s Sirna Therapeutics is Acquired by Merck
    San Francisco-based SIRNA Therapeutics has been acquired by Merck for $1.1 billion. This is further affirmation of San Francisco’s leadership in biotechnology and life sciences, and of the cutting-edge research that is occurring in the Mission Bay corridor.  The SFCED worked actively with SIRNA to facilitate the relocation of their headquarters here from Colorado in 2005.  According to President and CEO Howard Robin, “we selected San Francisco after a search that included Boston, San Diego, Virginia and New Jersey…Clearly, the welcome mat was out for us to make this the home for our new headquarters.”  The SFCED congratulates SIRNA on this milestone, and will continue our efforts to attract and retain jobs in this vital sector.

    Times Kleiner Perkins Launches Award to Spur Green Innovation
    Venture capitalist firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has announced a $100,000 annual prize for entrepreneurs who make breakthroughs in green energy generation, storage, conservation or policies anywhere in the world. The firm aims to accelerate innovation in green technology, a sector they believe could be the "biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century."

    City to get down to business with USOC officials
    The San Francisco Olympic delegation will meet with USOC officials to find out exactly what it will take to bring the 2016 Summer Games to San Francisco. San Francisco is among five possible cities for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

    Diamond to double SF staff to capitalize on Bowl Sponsorship
    Diamond Foods plans to raise its profile in the city by doubling its office space and staff. The company hopes to capitalize on the attention generated from its sponsorship of the Emerald Bowl, a college football game which is held at AT&T Park each year.

    San Francisco project taps radio waves for connectivity
    San Francisco's Public Works Department and Xtech LLC, a San Francisco based systems integrator, employed Gigabeam Corporation's point-to-point wireless system to connect San Francisco's water pump stations with a broadband connection. Previously, the isolated locations of the water-pump stations made a broadband connection impossible.

    Tourism dollars add up San Francisco seeing more visitors, more cash-it's our No. 1 industry
    San Francisco posted solid tourism gains in 2005, drawing in 15.74 million visitors, a 4.1 percent year-over-year increase, the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau said in its annual report.

    San Francisco cruise ship season expected to be big boon
    The arrival of more than 50,000 cruise ship passengers in San Francisco will kick off the biggest cruise season in the city's history, the Port predicts. The 2006 cruise season is expected to generate $60 million in economic benefit to the city.

    San Francisco is listed as the top city in the United States to visit in Cond Nast's Traveler's Reader's Choice Awards
    San Francisco has once again been voted the No. 1 travel destination in the United States according to a poll in the Condé Nast Traveler magazine. This marks the 13th consecutive year in which the city has received this title.

    Dealmaker: Gavin Newsom: Mayor Assembled $18 Million Bid to Lure Stem Cell Institute
    San Francisco was chosen as the headquarters of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, beating out two other finalist cities, San Diego and Sacramento. Along with Mayor Gavin Newsom, the SFCED was a main player in making this dream a reality for the city.

    Mission Bay Developer Nabs Biotech
    Sirna Therapeutics, a San Francisco-based biotechnology company, is expanding its operations from 5,000 to 40,000 square feet. The company will move from its current location at China Basin to Alexandria’s new building at Mission Bay in November 2006. The company, with the assistance of the SFCED, made their initial relocation to San Francisco from Boulder, Co., in 2004.
  • 2/27/06 - SF Business Times
    S.F. Reels City Exporter Back from Oakland
    Global food and beverage exporter Otis McAllister had been contemplating a move from San Francisco to Oakland after being informed of a rent hike. However, by collaborating with the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the SFCED was able to make San Francisco's business advantages more compelling than Oakland's, and ultimately retain another business in the city.


  • 1/16/06 - SF Business Times
    S.F. Reaches Out to Hollywood
    San Francisco Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier is leading the way for the city to implement film recommendations made in an SFCED film industry study released in 2005. The study outlines best practices and successes, and makes recommendations.
