IT & Software
The San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley are home to more than 4133 IT firms—including most of the leading industry players—and an IT workforce of over 188,000. More than 78% of San Francisco households are wired to the Internet and over $1.6 billion was invested in IT and digital media in the region during the first quarter of 2008. The Bay Area boasts the largest aggregation of research universities and federal research institutions in the nation and area colleges and universities produce more Ph.D. scientists and engineers than any other metropolitan area in the U.S.
Signs point to an increasing concentration of IT companies in the Bay Area—the percentage of San Francisco office space leased to tech companies has risen from 14% in 2004 to 25% in 2006—and the Bay Area's legendary quality of life, cultural landscape and network of leading technological research and educational institutions continue to attract the talented and educated workforce that drive successful IT businesses.
