Sierra Club Comments on San Francisco Green Living

The Bay Area has strong ties with the Sierra Club, the environmental organization founded in 1892 by naturalist John Muir. The club is based in San Francisco, and nearly a quarter of its 630,000 members live in California, many in this region.

In March, the group brought in Michael Brune, a longtime environmental activist previously with the Rainforest Action Network, as its new executive director. Membership in the Sierra Club has declined in recent years, and Mr. Brune is on a mission to increase awareness of the club's environmental campaigns by using technology like Facebook and Twitter. He is also ramping up the group's focus on promoting clean energy.

The Sierra Club's local clout was on display last month when some backers of a proposal to bring the America's Cup sailing regatta to San Francisco considered seeking an exemption from environmental review from the government that would have avoided red tape but potentially raised the risk of environmental damage.

The club's representatives argued against that choice, and in the end, the regatta backers decided not to seek the exemption.

Mr. Brune, 39 years old, moved to the Bay Area in 1995 and now lives in Alameda. Last week, he discussed how eco-friendly Bay Area residents really are and how he commutes.
