SF economic update
California jobless rate increases
California’s unemployment inched to an all-time high of 12.6 percent in March even as employers added jobs.
The state economy added 4,200 jobs, with manufacturing, education, health care and hospitality all showing increases. But that gain was swamped by 117,000 Californians who entered the work force. Analysts believe many are jobless workers who had given up employment searches but have been lured back into the job market by signs of economic recovery.
San Francisco's unemployment rate is 10.3
Venture capitalists invested $4.7 billion in 681 deals in the first quarter of 2010 according to the MoneyTree report released by PriceWaterHouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association.
The Life Sciences sector (biotechnology and medical device industries combined) saw a notable decrease in venture capital investing during the first quarter, dropping 26 percent in dollars and 21 percent in deals from the prior quarter, with $1.3 billion going into 160 deals
In the clean technology, meanwhile, were up 87 percent in terms of dollars and 44 percent in the number of deals from the fourth quarter of 2009.
