Bay Area wins $8.7M in stem cell cash

California’s stem cell research funding agency awarded $28 million, including nearly $8.7 million for Bay Area organizations.

The Basic Biology II awards from the San Francisco-based California Institute for Regenerative Medicine went to nine nonprofits and one for-profit. The awards are aimed at answering fundamental questions about stem cell biology — both embryonic and reprogrammed cells — and to help develop biomedical tools that use or further stem cell technology.

UCSF researcher John Rubenstein was approved for a $1,387,800 grant.
