For the first time in many months, the amount of money consumers are spending in the Bay Area has begun to increase, both compared with last month and with a year ago.

On average, sales increased 4.9 percent for the most recent three months compared with the month-earlier period in the nine counties. Sales increased 4.8 percent year-over-year.

Santa Clara County had the biggest year-over-year change -- 11.25 percent. The smallest year-over-year increase in the Bay Area was 0.58 percent in Contra Costa. San Francisco had an increase of 0.97 percent.
