Bay Area consumers area still staying home
National figures show the recession may be over. But Bay Area consumers are continuing to keep their wallets and purses closed, though perhaps not as tightly as in the past.
The most recent figures from the California Franchise Tax Board show that consumers in the nine counties from Napa in the north to Santa Clara in the south spent 9 percent less in the three months ended in April compared with the year-earlier three months.
San Francisco got a monthly average of $7.7 million in the three months through April, about 11.4 percent less than in the year-earlier period.
