US jobless rate climbs to 9.8 in September

In September, the unemployment rate in the US rose to 9.8% from 9.7% in August.  The US economy lost a net total of 263,000 jobs from a revised 201,000 in the previous month according to the Labor Department.  More than 7.2 million jobs have been eliminated since December 2007 when the recession started. 

Average hourly earnings rose by a penny in September, while weekly wages fell $1.54 to $616.11 according to the government data.  Average working weekly hours fell back to 33, a record low level.

Job losses were in sectors including the construction-64,000, services-147,000, retalilers-38,500, and government-53,000.
