US job losses slow

In July, the US economy lost 247,000 jobs, 73,000 jobs less than predicted. The unemployment rate fell down to 9.4% in July from 9.5% last month, the first drop from April 2008. Average hourly earnings rose to $18.56 in July from $18.53 in June. The average working week rose to 33.1 hours in July from 33 hours last month.

Job losses were visible in almost all industries including construction 76,000 jobs and manufacturing- 52,000 but they were fewer than expected. Education and health services were among these industries that added jobs and they accounted for 17,000.
