UCSF and other UC med centers revamp breast cancer study
A statewide program that is using $10.1 million in new grants to revamp the study and care of breast cancer is launched by the University of California and five other medical centers. The program is led by UC San Francisco Medical Center where initially 150,000 women statewide will be studied, screened and monitored for decades, according to a new release from September 29. According to UC, the effort will involve "designing and testing new approaches to research, technology and health care delivery."
The study is funded by a $5.3 million grant from the University of California and a $4.8 million grant from the Safeway Foundation.
According to Dr. John D. Stobo's predictions, UC's senior vice president for health sciences and services, the multi-campus initiative will "demonstrate that the total of what can be accomplished by UC functioning as an integrated system can far exceed the sum of contribution by the individual campuses."
