Stimulus jolt: Bay Area labs land $240 million

Bay Area's projects at research and institutions and companies account for more than $240 million. This money that comes from federal stimulus in California represents only the first year of two-year grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The total amount of federal stimulus is accounted for $10 billion.

Most of the $240 million was already passed to institutions ranging from $1.5 million for Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute to $169,089 for a Marin County shop to develop a video game for children with cerebral palsy. Kaiser Foundation Research Institute and the University of California, San Francisco have received a total $25 million grant.

Stanford University has collected more than $58 million, the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute has won $28.5 million, and UC Berkeley researchers have received total grants in the amount of $16.8 million in the first year.    

UCSF has received 182 grants worth more than $62.5 million, according to October's figures prepared by NIH.  The total amount of awarded grants for the last two years is nearly $125 million including grants for Kaiser Foundation Research Institute.
