Bay Area biofuels companies get $72M in stimulus

A South San Francisco-based Solazyme, Inc. has received the government's advanced biorefinery stimulus award in the amount of $22 million.  The company will build a pilot plant in Riverside, PA to produce an algae oil that can be transformed into oil-based fuels.

Solazyme was one of the three Bay Area companies including Amyris Biotechnologies, Inc. from Emeryville, CA and ZeaChem from Lakewood, CO whose research and development facility is in Menlo Park that were awarded.  The award was made in the hope of building a cleaner, more sustainable transportation in the US.
