Bay Area unemployment still rising

In August, the San Francisco metropolitan area's unemployment rate rose to 9.5 percent from 9.4 percent in July.  Unadjusted California's unemployment rate for the same period was 12.1% compared to the National rate at 9.6 percent according to the state Employment Development Department.

In the San Francisco region that includes San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties the biggest month-over-month job losses were in government- 700 jobs and educational and health services- 600 jobs.  Additionally, 1,400 job losses were noted in all other sectors combined.

Over the last year, the region lost 50,000 jobs, 5 percent the total number of jobs.  Job decreases were visible in almost all industries except private educational and health services, which added 800 jobs.
