SF metropolitan area home prices inch upward

Home prices in the San Francisco metropolitan area rose 2.8 percent in August, following an increase of 3.3 percent in July and 3.8 percent in June, according to the Case-Shiller/S&P Home Price Index.  The region's prices though are still 12.5 percent below compared with the same time a year ago.  San Francisco metropolitan area is defined by the Case-Shiller as the San Francisco County, San Mateo, Marin, Alameda, and Contra Costa.

Nationwide, home prices in 20 major metropolitan areas rose 1.2 percent in August and 1.6 percent in July.  This area's prices are 11.3 percent below than they were at the same time a year ago.
