Report: S.F., Oakland fittest metro in California

San Francisco continues to be one the fittest and healthiest city in California according to the American College of Sports Medicines (ACSM). Last year San Francisco placed No. 4 and this year the city along with Oakland and the Bay Area came in at No. 5. The San Francisco area that includes Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties scored higher than other cities in California for factors as follows:

  • "More farmers' markets per capita"
  • "Higher percentage eating 5+ servings of fruits/vegetables per day"
  • "Higher percentage using public transportation to work"
  • "Higher percent bicycling or walking to work"
  • "Higher number of people with health insurance"

In San Francisco there are 5.8 percent workers who bike or walk to work compared with 3.5 percent in San Jose and 3.3 percent in Los Angeles according to the report. 91.1 percent people in San Francisco have health insurance compared with 84.2 percent in San Jose and 83.8 percent in Los Angeles. 14.5 percent of workers in San Francisco use public transportation vs. only 3.8 percent in San Jose and 6.1 percent in Los Angeles.
