CIRM awards $250M for stem cell research

CIRM awards $250M for stem cell research

$250 million in grants have been approved by California's stem cell agency to 14 medical agencies including Stanford University in the amount of $52 million.  The grants will help shorten the time to discover stem cell treatments that usually takes a "decade or more."

Among grants awarded locally are:

  • 1. Sangamo Biosciences of Richmond in the amount of $14.6 million
  • 2. UC San Francisco's Jefferey Bluestone- $19.9 million for diabetes research and UCSF's Mitchel Berger- $19.2 million brain tumor grant.

Stanford University has been awarded $163 million in CIRM grants for 42 projects so far. UCSF has received $122 million for 32 projects, and UC Berkeley- $32 million for 10 projects.
