San Francisco ranked seventh as one of the best cities to earn a living. The country's 40 largest census-defined metros were used for the list and evaluated on median incomes, cost of living and how many of the Forbes' 400 best big companies and 200 best small companies were headquartered there. The San Francisco metro, which includes San Jose, was seventh on the list largely due to a strong tech industry. The Bay Area has a concentration of prominent tech companies ranging from start-ups to Google that provide high salaries and venture capital which help to offset the high cost of living for inhabitants.
